The Overwhelmed Brain Podcast Journey – Post 28

Today is December 28th, 2013, 40 days after the launch of my podcast.

In my last post, I talked about the 5-Day Holiday Blues Special that was to air December 25th through December 29th that never made it into the listings in iTunes. Well, on December 27th, two days after the holiday show launched (and 3 shows later), all of the holiday episodes finally got listed!

My main concern not being listed in iTunes was that no one would actually hear the show on the date I intended. However, it turned out that subscribers were actually listening to the show! On top of that, because the general public couldn’t access my holiday shows, I got an excellent estimation of how many subscribers I may actually have. The verdict? About a 1000.

However, this number can only be proven true after the 8 week New and Noteworthy status expires. When the show disappears from N & N, then mainly subscribers will be getting it. The good news (and the bad news) is that in 16 days, the show will be at the 8 week mark, and will fall off New and Noteworthy. This will give me a very clear approximation of how many subscribers the show has. However, the down side is that the show will no longer be on the front page… unless it can qualify for  “What’s Hot!” Regardless, if the show goes a week at the bottom of the podcast barrel, my download numbers will then tell all.

I’m looking forward to taking a break from editing next week. I’ve been editing all day, every day this week because of the holiday special. For my next 5 day series, I’ll have a lot more time to edit. And I won’t be cutting it so close (I just finished editing, and uploaded tomorrow’s show this evening. Too close!).

Let’s check the iTunes rankings:

The current iTunes New and Noteworthy rankings:

  • All of New and Noteworthy: #25 (#50 two days ago)
  • Health New and Noteworthy: #1 (#6 two days ago)
  • Business New and Noteworthy: #1 (#15 two days ago)
  • Education New and Noteworthy: #1 (#10 two days ago)

Well there you go! Holiday Blues Special brought it back up. It’s been challenging to get #1 lately, so it’s nice to see it up there again! I’ve chatted with other podcasters lately, and quite a few of them didn’t release any episodes during the holidays. So glad I did, because I probably got a lot of their listeners! Good to know, those of you who are paying attention…

Here are the latest download numbers from libsyn:

  • Dec 22: 1381 downloads (New release today)
  • Dec 23: 1156 downloads (1 day after new release)
  • Dec 24: 1137 downloads (2 days after new release)
  • Dec 25: 1334 downloads (New release today)
  • Dec 26: 1759 downloads (New release today)
  • Dec 27: 1946 downloads (New release today)
  • Dec 28: 1768 downloads (New release today)

Total downloads to date:  28,868  (was 25,264 two days ago)

Almost a 2000 download day! That’s so cool. A mix of people listening to podcasts on their new gadgets, other podcasters not releasing episodes during the holidays, and my five day in a row show, probably all combined to make for great download numbers.

The final holiday show airs tomorrow. Then we’re back to our regularly scheduled, weekly program (Whew! I need a break).

Stay tuned…

Zombie Wurld? So there is some explaining to do about this Zombie Wurld Podcast thingy. ...

Glad to see your New and Noteworthy ranking jump upward. It would be fascinating to know what information and what ratio determines the rankings. Looking at your downloads, I’m inclined to think that rankings are influenced by downloads from a couple days earlier but only Apple knows for sure. On thing’s for sure, your additional efforts are paying off!

I’m curious… how much time are you spending on editing? I know your show lengths vary quite a bit so that might be a tough question to answer. Do you feel like you’re getting faster at it?

    • My feeling is that you are correct Trevor. After reviewing my numbers every day, the jump in rank seems to be closely tied to the download numbers from 24 to 48 hours ago. Good observation!

As far as editing, absolutely. I am getting faster. In the beginning, most of my editing was removing my own stuttering and mistakes. Now I focus more on content and value. If the conversation with a guest goes into a half-hour of how amazing his book sales were, I’ll cut out 28 minutes of it. I take out long pauses and other irrelevant info too. Lastly, I have added monologues to the beginning and end of my show, against the advice of several other podcasters. The download numbers are still going up, so I think I’ll keep the monologues in for now.

Oh, and a direct answer to your question, it used to take me all day to edit one show. Now it takes about 2 to 4 hours, but half of that is changing the music intro and creating new monologues, which I enjoy.
