The Overwhelmed Brain Podcast Journey – Post 26

Today is December 25th, 2013, 37 days after the release of my podcast.

Well, I worked two full days editing 3 back to back shows for my holiday special, and will be editing a fourth today. Got one uploaded this morning, and iTunes didn’t post it. Hooray! However, Stitcher had no problem getting it up on their list, so I know my RSS feed works. Apple wasn’t kidding about that email they sent: Some episodes my be delayed during the holidays.

So Stitcher comes through and picks up the broken pieces. As disappointed as I am that iTunes is still not displaying my Day 1 Holiday Blues Special, it gave me an idea of what kind of downloads I’m getting without iTunes. Very cool! So today’s stats will include my findings. And as of right now, 4:31 PM PST, iTunes still has not listed a show I uploaded to libsyn at 3:30 AM this morning.

Here are the Christmas Day download numbers from libsyn:

  • Dec 19: 786 downloads (4 days after new release)
  • Dec 20: 585 downloads (5 days after new release)
  • Dec 21: 667 downloads (6 days after new release)
  • Dec 22: 1381 downloads (New release today)
  • Dec 23: 1156 downloads (1 day after new release)
  • Dec 24: 1137 downloads (2 days after new release)
  • Dec 25: 1334 downloads (New release today – Holiday Blues – Day not over yet)

Total downloads to date:  23,088  (was 21,039 two days ago)

What I thought would be the slowest day of downloads turns into what’s coming to be a record-breaking download day for me (record is 1381 in one day). Maybe a bunch of new devices are downloading podcasts today. Nice! Note to self: Great time of year to come out with your podcast!

The question is, how many of those 1334 downloads are the Holiday Blues Special alone? Well, thanks to libsyn, we know this info!

Libsyn tells me that 562 of those downloads are from today’s release of the HBS. That’s HUGE, considering iTunes hasn’t even posted the darn thing! That means that other podcatchers out there are helping my numbers tremendously. This could be a good indication of how the show will do once it drops off the New and Noteworthy cliff. Of course, today is Christmas! So I think I’ll wait until January before making that kind of prediction. The only other way to get to the Holiday show is to go directly to my website and stream it there. But those numbers are tiny, so I can’t imagine that’s accounting for hundreds of downloads.

The current iTunes New and Noteworthy rankings:

  • All of New and Noteworthy: #45 (#34 two days ago)
  • Health New and Noteworthy: #3 (#3 two days ago)
  • Business New and Noteworthy: #7 (#4 two days ago)
  • Education New and Noteworthy: #4 (#3 two days ago)

I wonder if my holiday episodes will be released in iTunes before the holidays are over… Oh well. They are timeless, and are certain to be there next year (when I get to re-release them!).

iTunes not posting my show today was a good test, and very educational. Should be an interesting January.

Stay tuned…

Very interesting about what the iTunes fluke is showing you. Congratulations on another big day! One thing seems clear — your audience is hungry for your content and that’s terrific!

    • Ha ha, perhaps! I’m so confused. Stitcher shows few downloads, but they are coming from somewhere! And still no show in iTunes : (
      Guess I learned my lesson!

Even though your two newest episodes are not showing up in the iTunes store (I just looked), they are being downloaded by people who’ve subscribed to your podcast via iTunes. I subscribed via iTunes a couple weeks ago and I got one episode yesterday (#0010) and one today (#0011). I think this iTunes fluke could give you an indication of how many subscribers you have right now.

        • Oooh, you may have just solved the mystery Trevor! That’s the most logical explanation, and you just backed it up with data!

Wow, thank you so much! Virtual high-five my man! I’ll post the numbers tonight.
