Today is December 13th, 2013, 25 days since the launch of my podcast.
Had an amazing interview tonight with a guest for the Holiday Blues show coming up December 25th to the 29th. Well, I wasn’t amazing, but she was. I really loved what we talked about, and can’t wait to add it to the mix. My favorite shows are the ones where conversation comes easy.
Speaking of amazing interviews, I’ll be posting my episode with author and speaker Steve Olsher this weekend. Let me tell you, he does not put on a show. Now, I don’t mean that negatively. I mean, he doesn’t try to impress – at all.
He wasn’t really conversational, he was just honest. And I totally dug it! He’s one of the first guests to just kinda say what was on his mind, no matter who he thought it might offend or not. So even though he wasn’t the type of guy to ask me how I was doing, he provided amazing content, spoke straight from the hip, and actually opened up at the end of the show, revealing some very personal things about himself. What I thought was going to be a challenging interview, turned out to be one of my favorites.
Otherwise, it’s the end of the week. By next Friday, I’ll be saying goodbye to my day job and jumping full time into my podcast and website. Good timing too, I’m going to need more hours to kick out these specials I keep mentioning. Hope I have the megabytes available in libsyn! Ha ha, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if I upgraded ; )
Here are the current iTunes New and Noteworthy rankings:
- All of New and Noteworthy: #60 (#30 yesterday)
- Health New and Noteworthy: #11 (#1 yesterday)
- Business New and Noteworthy: #15 (#2 yesterday)
- Education New and Noteworthy: #9 (#2 yesterday)
Wooh! #60 keeps me on the page… barely! Numbers have certainly jumped around today. I noticed the All New & Noteworthy had some new players. Now, here’s what’s interesting “Cool Stories in Music” is the number 1 podcast listed in N & N right now. It has one “Coming Soon” show, and one actual show, but nothing else. Can you take a guess how many ratings and reviews it has?
130 ratings, and 102 reviews!
That is one big support group! But, this does give me some insight, and a theory, about the iTunes algorithm. I see a new show like this every now and then just pop out of nowhere, and hit the top spots. This tells me that podcasts hitting the top spots probably get an initial boost from all their ratings, reviews, and subscribes. BUT, my thought is that, in order to stay in the top spots, those R, R, and S have to keep trickling in.
So if a show appears high in the ranks right at the outset, but never again, then the fan base for that show spent all their ammo in the initial launch. Unless the show can generate continuous R, R & S, the show cannot sustain high rankings. In other words, once the boost from the support group fizzles out, the show has to rely on a true audience to survive.
This explains why some top-rated shows get pushed out of the top spots – they are being displaced by the brand new, heavily crowd-supported (sometimes illogically so), just-released podcasts. It’s great to be seen in N & N, but let’s hope the new shows on the block can deliver what the listeners want.
Why do I have the strangest feeling that Cliff Ravenscraft just finished his 4-week A to Z course in podcasting? With all the new shows in N & N, it wouldn’t surprise me if there was a correlation!
Let’s look at download numbers in libsyn:
- Dec 7: 286 downloads
- Dec 8: 586 downloads
- Dec 9: 694 downloads
- Dec 10: 615 downloads
- Dec 11: 733 downloads
- Dec 12: 656 downloads
- Dec 13: 726 downloads
Total downloads to date: 11,716 (was 11,137 yesterday)
I just noticed the math is off! If I have 11,137 yesterday, and 11,716 today, that’s a difference of 579. However, I have to factor in that some of yesterday’s numbers are part of today’s, since I typically go past midnight when I’m writing these posts. So, just deal with it for now. I’ll come up with a better system. : )
Otherwise, I really don’t know how my download numbers have stayed so consistent. Hmm, the holidays are coming up… I wonder if stress is starting to build up in people. Could be a factor.
I think I’ll announce my Holiday Blues special on this weekend’s podcast. With my numbers staying consistently high (for me) and the releases doing so well, I have a feeling I’ll reach a lot of people. Maybe it will generate a buzz!
