Today is December 8th, 2013, 19 days after my podcast launched (again! I just realized I was up past midnight last night posting Journey #11. So yesterday’s numbers really represented December 7th).
Yes, Great Mustaches in History is still #1 in iTunes New and Noteworthy. I have a feeling because I keep talking about it, it’s making people check it out. Oh no, I’m facilitating it’s progress! OK, better just leave it be.
At 3:30 AM, libsyn sent my interview with Scott Barlow out on the RSS feed train. It took me half the day to get that show ready yesterday. I don’t know why… I think I haven’t perfected my system yet. I will say this however, it’s the first show where the audio levels were almost perfect. That saves me a lot of editing time. Plus the fact that I’ve completely eliminated any background hiss. But, even after I uploaded the show to libsyn, and it released this morning with no issues, I listened to it again this morning and realized I needed to edit it again!
There wasn’t a technical problem with it, but my questions at the beginning kept him talking about himself a little too long. My wife told me something a while back that stuck with me:
When I turn on your show, what’s in it for me?
So, now when I listen to my own show, I pretend I’m a listener. If I don’t get what I came for, I get bored. I noticed this in this morning’s show, so I edited it. Again. I cut like 6 minutes out of the beginning of the show, then re-uploaded it to iTunes. Thankfully, it went off without a hitch, and the new show is now available.
The only other thing I changed about this particular podcast was the bitrate I ended up at. Meaning, I usually create a 128Kbps mp3. But I decided to compress it a little and go with 96Kbps. The difference in sound was negligible, so I let it be. I am running close to my download limit for the month, and need to make my files a tad smaller. Plus, I have a special 5 day Christmas show coming up between Christmas and New Years (yup, you heard it here first) for people who are alone during the holidays. I plan on having a guest or two on, but it will likely be just me every day. We’ll see – I haven’t figured out all the logistics. But it’s one of those Big Hairy Audacious Goals I set for myself, and have now committed to by typing it here.
I also have a multi-part show coming up on finding your passion. That’s another BHAG , but I want to experiment with everything I can while I’m still on the front page of N & N (at least in the Business, Education, and Health sections). Plus, I really want to do these shows. I actually want to reach people who are looking for their passion, or in the case with my holiday show, need some company during the holidays, because it just feels right. It feels like I might make a difference in their lives.
The more I pour myself into this, the more I realize how much of an impact I’m having on other people. I have a guy in Morocco who follows me – just love this guy! He even comments on my Facebook page. He wrote, “I feel alive because of you!” WOW, is that not worth every dollar I’ve spent on my journey? That’s just amazing.
I think I wrote about this before, but someone else wrote to me too, a woman, who really gave me a big compliment as well. I was actually skeptical that she wanted something from me. Like by complimenting me, she’d get her website mentioned in my show. But she didn’t ask me to do that. In fact, I asked her if she had a website, and she said no. So, she reached out from somewhere in the world, and complimented me. That is powerful.
Podcasting reaches people. Listeners are choosing to put my voice in their ear for an hour, just to hear what my guest and I have to say. I’m still in awe about that.
OK, snapping out of it now.
Let’s get to the current iTunes rankings:
- All of New and Noteworthy: #63 (#97 yesterday)
- Health New and Noteworthy: #8 (#16 yesterday)
- Business New and Noteworthy: #14 (#22 yesterday)
- Education New and Noteworthy: #9 (#16 yesterday)
Better than yesterday! As usual, all over the place. Let’s compare these rankings with recent download numbers. I checked out libsyn a couple times today, but it’s been several hours now… so let’s see.
Here are the most recent download stats:
- Dec 2: 680 downloads
- Dec 3: 424 downloads
- Dec 4: 489 downloads
- Dec 5: 300 downloads
- Dec 6: 271 downloads
- Dec 7: 286 downloads
- Dec 8: 586 downloads
Total downloads to date: 8477 (was 7650 on Dec. 7th)
Nearly a thousand downloads overnight. Not bad! I am starting to see a trend though. The day I release a show, the numbers rise substantially. And since my show is not ranking high, I’m thinking it’s got to be subscribers downloading it. Estimated guess? About half that number could be subscribers. If that were true, it might indicate about 400 subscribers.
This reminds me, I’m going to do a test. I’m going to see if I can create a link to subscribe directly to my podcast in iTunes. And everywhere I can, only ask people to subscribe to my podcast from this point on. I don’t care about ratings right now (I have enough to ride the wave in New and Noteworthy for now. I know this because the Mustache show is number one with only two ratings from his mom and dad!) In my most recent episode, I’m giving the listeners one call to action at the very end: Subscribe to the show. That’s it. I’ll report on the progress soon.
